Project Honeymoon - Day 9: Napier

McDonnel Douglas DC-3 at the McD's in Taupo
3.5 hour Drive from Rotorua to Napier with a stop in Taupo for Lunch - The attraction in Taupo is the lake, but we can't ignore this interesting McDonald's.  Check out the huge airplane out front.  You can even go up the stairs and eat inside.  I remember as a kid, the local McDonald's had a booth shaped like a plane where you could have a birthday party.  I'm sure this plane in Taupo is a popular birthday spot for the kids here.

Guy Fawkes Day! - Hubby had noticed folks with fireworks when we were in Rotorua and commented Guy Fawkes Day must be coming around.  I had never heard of this event before.  Apparently, Guy Fawkes was some guy who tried to blow up a Parliament building; his attempt failed, but in his honour, people light fireworks on November 5 every year.  The beach at Napier was a fortunate place for us to be that evening.  Our B&B was literally across the street and we quickly went outside once we heard the loud whistles and bangs of the fireworks.  This was not the Symphony of Fire we have back home; but more of a cozy community event where locals built bonfires on the beach and lit their own fireworks.  I tried out the "fireworks" mode on my point-and-shoot digital camera.  I got a few decent photos out of the 50 or so that I took.  My favourite photo is the one of 3 people twirling sparklers; makes me want to experiment more with light painting.
