Project Honeymoon - Day 6: Drive to Waitomo

"Oops...did I do that?" - I accidentally plugged something into the wall I shouldn't have and blew a fuse.  Totally killed all electricity in our hotel room.  Who knew power bars had voltage limits?  I wanted to plug in both my camera battery and hubby's iPhone to charge simultaneously.  We only have one plug adaptor and I had brought a power bar so we could plug in multiple electronics at a time.  The power bar has a fuse which burst when I plugged it in.  The spark of fire made me scream which promptly woke up hubby.  It was 7am.  Oops.  I called down to reception and told them that we had no power (but didn't admit it was my fault).   They said I was the second one this morning to report no electricity.  Uh oh...I wonder how many rooms I affected?  A technician came and unlocked the fuse box in the room and set everything back to normal.  He asked me if I had plugged anything in.  I sheepishly say "Yes".  He says it happens all the time...that makes me feel better.

Pick up a better map
- We decide to get a map book from the visitor's centre we visited a few days ago.  We had looked at other map books at other shops but liked this one the best: New Zealand Handy Atlas by Hema Maps.  The size is compact and has city maps of all the places we are visiting except for Waitomo and Franz Josef.  These two places are so small and remote that they probably don't need their own city map

On the road to Waitomo - The drive is about 3 hours south of Auckland.  Waitomo is home to the Waitomo Caves and we have an underground adventure planned for the next day.

There's a fork at Ngaruawahia - Again, I'm navigator.  I guide hubby out of downtown Auckland to take Hwy 1 south.
Me:  At nah-gah-roo-ah-wah-hee-ah the highway splits and we have to take Hwy 39
Hubby: Where?
Me: Nah-gah-roo-ah-wah-hee-ah or nang-gah-roo-ah-wah-hee-ah?
Hubby: um...Ok

What's a tangelo? - About 45 minutes from Waitomo we get hungry and stop off at a fresh fruit and veggie stand in Otorohanga.  They're selling "Tangelos" which look just like oranges but more flat than round...kinda like a large mandarin.  In my head tangelo = tangerine + pomelo. I pick up two out of curiosity and have one in the car.  The meat is a dark orange and is neither sweet nor sour (maybe mine wasn't ripe enough?) .  It's super juicy and although there are seeds, they are so soft that I can't feel them in my mouth to spit them out.

Arrive at our stay for the next 2 nights: Waitomo Caves Guest Lodge - We're greeted by Colin, Janet, and their dog, Gypsy.  They offer us their room with the best view...fantastic!
